08/14/08 - The Long Bike Back

The sun is setting over the tree lined Main Street somewhere in America’s heartland. Two men on bicycles ride along the shoulder of the road. They began their trek in Newport, Oregon and will end more than 3400 miles away in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They’ve already traveled through Yellowstone National Park and many iconic American towns, viewing the majesty of the country. What is not visible is that the cyclist in front is plagued by constant pain in his back, knee and hip; this ride is his labor of love. This is his ride to recapture the spirit, innocence, joy and freedom of riding a bicycle.

Pearson and Peter Constantino grew up by transcontinental US Route 20 in the New York Finger Lakes. Like most kids their bikes were their freedom, their mode of transportation and a great source of fun. But unlike other kids cycling remained their passion even as they grew older. One summer as teenagers Pearson and Peter, along with their father, cycled Route 20 from their home in Skaneateles to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This ride inspired their dream of riding across America on Route 20. As adults, the still avid cyclists were preparing for their cross country trip when, on a warm morning in late June 2006, their plans were derailed.

Pearson, cycling to work, turned off a trail and onto a busy suburban road, just as he had countless times before. This time was different; 300 yards later he was struck on his left side by an SUV. He landed, unconscious, under a parked car suffering a shattered hip, a broken back and a severe concussion. The driver fled the scene, leaving Pearson to die if not for the help of a passerby.

After two surgeries and nine days in the hospital Pearson, broken but unbowed, resolved not only to get back on his bike, but to fulfill his dream of riding across the country. In the Fall of 2008 Pearson and Peter will ride across historic Route 20 not only for themselves but for all the cyclists who had their rides cut short. In their mission they are working to raise awareness for safety on the roads and to quell the epidemic of hit-and-run drivers.

Pearson and Peter’s journey will cover all of Route 20, the longest and one of the oldest transcontinental roads in the United States. This Main Street America includes 12 diverse states, many cities and towns, both large and small and the history of the US. They will ride on the sometimes dangerous, narrow road, through all weather conditions, enduring hecklers and traffic. This ride will illustrate the history and culture of America, of cyclists and of the Constantino family, as they ride through their hometown of Skaneateles, New York.

The film, THE LONG BIKE BACK, will document Pearson’s heroic odyssey from the hit-and-run accident through his recovery and his quest with Peter to ride across the United States. Not only will the film be about Pearson’s personal journey but about the greatness of America from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast, from the natural wonders of Yellowstone to the big cities of Chicago and Boston, from mighty Mississippi River to the calm of the Finger Lakes. The Long Bike Back will showcase the spirit of resilience and overcoming of obstacles, the true spirit of America.

12/13/07 - Rack & Go’s guide to effective and safe road travel during the holiday season

AS SEEN ON CHANNEL 12 WESTCHESTER NEWS!

RACK & GO’s GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE ROAD TRIPPING DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Follow these steps to safely transport all of your presents and gear to Grandma’s house this winter.

1. Understand what the options are for your car.

Take a look at your car or SUV’s roof.  Does it have factory rails?  Does it have a factory rack?
Or do you just have a roof with nothing at all?

a. Factory rails are the molded pieces that run parallel to each other along the edges of the rooftop.
If that is the case, then you will still need “cross bars” in order to carry your gear.

b. A factory rack is the factory rails with “cross bars” that run across the roof, connecting the two
rails, in which case you will be able to carry most of your gear with standard aftermarket
equipment (cargo bags, baskets, boxes, ski and snowboard carriers).

c. Nothing on your roof, means that your roof has no attachments and is shiny and smooth.
In order to get your gear, gifts and gadgets from here to there you will need an aftermarket
kit specially designed to fit the roof of your car.

If any of the above apply you can carry cargo effectively.  Armed with this knowledge, however, you will
be able to better negotiate the multitude of options available for you to stow and go.  Understanding what
your car is equipped with, will save you time and return trips to the store to purchase the right rack product
the first time out.

2. Look underneath your car’s rear bumper to see if there is a receiver hitch installed.

A hitch comes in many shapes and sizes.  If you are not sure if you have one or not, consult your owner’s
manual or call your dealer.  If you do have a hitch, the next step is to find out if it is a 1-1/4” or 2” hitch,
as different products will be available to you depending on the size of your hitch.

A popular misconception is that all cargo must be carried on the roof.  This effectively eliminates a lot of
people who either have ceiling height issues in their garage or are intimidated about lifting items above
their head onto the roof of their car.  There are a variety of cargo boxes and bike/ski racks that are
“hitch-mounted” off the back of the car.

The benefits of carrying your cargo off the rear of the car are many.  Besides not having to lift heavy
objects onto the roof of your vehicle or worrying about low bridges, tunnels or parking garages, you are
also helping the environment and saving money on gas because “hitch-mounted” products are more aero-
dynamic and will cause less drag on your vehicle at high speeds on the highway.

If you do not have a hitch, but like the idea, they can be purchased and installed on most makes
and models of vehicles.

3. Make a detailed list of everything you plan on carrying.

Take into consideration the sizes and shapes of the different things you will be bringing with you as
well as the weights of the items.  Are you carrying items that are odd shaped?  If you are carrying
skis, how long are they?  If you are carrying snowboards, will they have bindings on them?

These are all factors that will help to determine what cargo product will work best for you.  If the items
you are carrying are odd shaped, maybe a cargo bag that can be stuffed would be better then a hard-
shelled box!  If you need to carry down-hill or Nordic skis and boots and gear, a longer box might be the
better route to go… and if you need to carry all of the above, you probably need longer load bars to hold
a box and ski/snowboard carrier.  Again, armed with the right information for your needs, a good sales
person will be able to get you on the road with your gear safely and securely stowed away.

4. Security is an important point to consider when traveling with all your valuable gear in tow.

Are you taking a long trip, requiring an overnight stop?  The last thing you want to deal with is taking
everything off the car when you pull into a motel lot late at night!  Are you planning on driving to the
ski resort each morning? Why deal with lugging your skis to your room, when they can be safely stored
on the roof of the car?

Locks can be purchased for the racks, hitches, boxes and ski/snowboard/bike carriers so that your gear
will be securely locked to the roof or rear of your car when you are not nearby, allowing you the freedom
and flexibility to enjoy your holiday with out becoming a pack mule, lugging your stuff everywhere you go!

5. Last, but not least, think about your Planet.

If you pre-plan your road trip either by mapping it out, or using a GPS you can pick the shortest, quickest
and least trafficked road.  You are not only less likely to get lost, but you can save on gas and emit fewer
harmful toxins.  Also consider renting a hybrid for your road trip this holiday season.  There are a lot of car
rental companies and organizations like Better World Club offering hybrids now.  And definitely drive the
speed limit!  Not only will you arrive safely, but you will conserve your fuel…

In the season of giving, take an opportunity to give back to the Planet!

Catching Up With The Hybrids
By: Rock Stamberg
Published: September 27, 2007

With hybrid cars gaining in popularity due to their environmental friendliness and improved gas mileage, it was only a matter of time before the once specialty vehicles went mainstream. Many car manufacturers have begun selling hybrids and — surprise — they’ve begun to sell steadily to environmentally conscientious as well as mainstream car buyers. However, some car dealers have found their sales associates need to be educated about the benefits of “going green.” Several local dealers, including White Plains Honda, White Plains Lincoln/Mercury and White Plains Nissan, have opted instead to refer potential customers to a new business in White Plains that specializes in in-depth “green” vehicle information: Rack & Go at 10 Robertson Ave.
Setting up shop directly across the street from the County Center in July, Rack & Go has become White Plains’ go-to spot for those interested in learning about and/or purchasing “green” vehicles and custom-installed racks and other accessories.

Co-founders Steve Frind and Leslie Danon “sort of fell into this,” Frind says. “Our core business is vehicle outfitting. We do cargo bags, baskets, rack systems and trailer hitches, but our business symbolizes much more, which is responsible road travel.” Danon says, “People are generally environmentally conscious lately — especially with global warming and other issues [coming to the fore] — but there are some incorrect perceptions about hybrids out there, such as ‘they’re too slow’, which isn’t true.” She adds, “We’re here to help assuage their fears and misconceptions and then we hand-deliver them to the dealer.”

“We’re educators,” adds Frind. “We created this thing called the Go Network, which is an alliance of local car dealerships. We help them get people interested in the cars — we’ll arrange a test drive, teach them the benefits — and then we refer them to the local dealerships. In turn, they send us their rack business, which was always ancillary for them but now gives them a reason to work with us.”

“Our long-term goal is to have a foundation,” Danon says, “and create programs where we could, say, visit schools and colleges, because young people are the decision makers of tomorrow. They’re also going to influence their parents’ buying habits.”

“Ultimately,” Frind says, “we’d like to have Green Car Fest, a music, food and family festival that celebrates green cars,” with dealerships showing off their latest models. “But right now we’re concerned with getting the store off the ground,” he adds.

For more information, including their mission statement (“Open Road”) and “Green Car 101”, a handy guide to green vehicle terminology (“which changes every day,” according to Danon), visit Rack & Go’s Web site at rackandgo.com
